PathFinder: Finding a Newspaper Article

There are several sources available to Clark State students for finding newspaper articles. One of the best is Lexis-Nexis and it can be accesses by selecting "My Express Links" from the OhioLINK home page.

Once you see the Lexis-Nexis main page, click on "General News Topics." There are several options:

If you know who wrote the newspaper article you’re looking for click in the first box. Type the author’s name, last name first. Click Search. This should bring up a list of articles by that person.

If you know the title of the article, click in the first box and type the title of the article and click s'earch'. This works particularly well if you have first used the Newspaper Abstracts database to find the title of the article. However, not all of the newspapers in Newspaper Abstracts are available in Lexis-Nexis. The Wall Street Journal is not, for example.

In most cases a ‘keyword’ search works best. Here’s an example

Someone has told you that there was a good article on Dayton in the New York Times in March of 1996. You can find it in Lexis if you type in 'dayton ohio' at keyword, 'new york times' at additional terms and '3/06/96 and 3/06/96' in the date boxes.

Important: Lexis offers the most current newspaper articles. Articles from today’s morning newspapers are available within minutes of appearing in print.

Newspaper Abstracts

Access the Newspaper Abstracts database by choosing "Explore OhioLINK Databases by name" on the OhioLINK home page. Be sure to select the appropriate date coverage. You can search for newspaper article citations and abstracts using keyword, subject, author, and title. Full text is not available from this database. Many of the abstracts are quite informative, however. And remember, once you know the title of the newspaper article, you may very well be able to find the full text of that article in Lexis simply by typing the title at keyword in the General News Topics database in Lexis.

A Word About the New York Times

The New York Times is the United States’ "newspaper of record". This means that it has a responsibility to cover the national and international news that affects the U.S.

Clark State has the New York Times on microfilm from 1978 to1995 as well as access through Lexis. Other libraries have it back to when it began publication in the middle of the last century.
You can also locate articles in the New York Times, by using Newspaper Abstracts which can be found by clicking on Databases and Services from the library homepage.

Type a keyword or subject, title, etc., in the appropriate box. Use the drop down menu to change one of the parameters to Newspaper Title. Type in 'new york times.' Click search.
You should get a list of articles on that subject that appeared in the New York Times.

If you want to find an actual article in the New York Times on microfilm (this is fun, if you’ve never done it before) you have to print this screen* or write down the following info:
1. The date the article was published.
2. The section of the paper.
3. The page.
4. The column on the page.

In the case of our example, the article "A hometown feels less like home" was published on March 6, 1996, in section A, page 1, column 1.
