Clark State current students, faculty and staff: Be sure to investigate
the research databases on health sciences topics at the OhioLINK website.
Others which are available to the public are Noah, which houses health
information in English and in Spanish, and features the National Cancer
Institute's PDQ files, Healthtouch, Netwellness, and Websites Relevant
to Community Health Partnerships. Access and more descriptions follow
below.
Noah
Noah is a wonderful resource for health information. It has won lots of
best website type awards, and deserves them. When you connect, you'll
see the logo of the National Cancer Institute. Above that logo you'll
see the "Noah Bar". That bar contains boxes and words which
when clicked take you to other sources. Noah stands for the New York Online
Access to Health; you find this out by clicking one of the boxes in the
Noah Bar. The box on the right hand side toggles between English and Spanish--making
this a totally bilingual site.
Clicking on Health Topics will take you to a list of 14 health topics.
This is deceptive, however; clicking on any one of the 14 will take you
to a vast array of information, hotlines, services, etc. Other spots on
the Noah Bar will take you to the home pages of the New York Public Library
and the New York Academy of Medicine. You don't have to be a New Yorker
to get lots out of these sites.
The outstanding source that you'll find on the Noah home page is the National
Cancer Institute website. It has several excellent features, but perhaps
the most important is PDQ, the Cancer Statements for Patients and Physicians.
You can choose which is most appropriate.
I clicked on Ewing's Sarcoma and found excellent information for patients
in a very readable form (again, English or Spanish) and not so readable
(to the non medical person) information for physicians and health care
providers, complete with all of the treatment options for each stage of
the disease.
Another nice feature of this page is a Kid's section, which has children's
art and information for children about cancer. All of the NCI and PDQ
files are updated regularly. I understand that physicians rely on these
files for treatment information. All of the information is peer reviewed.
Healthtouch Online for Better Health
Click on Drug Information for information about prescription and over
the counter medications. The source here is Med-Span. The buttons for
Health Resource Directory and Health Information are both very useful.
The Health Resource Directory leads you to organizations which deal with
various diseases. Did you know there's one for 'jaw joints?'
The Health Information button takes you to information on specific diseases,
so you can find out what temporomandibular joint disease is.
Netwellness
Netwellness is maintained by the University of Cincinnati Medical Center,
and is a vast resource all by itself. It is dedicated to providing wellness
information and furthering good health. It includes many different resources,
and features Ask an Expert, an interactive forum where you can actually
ask a question of the person monitoring the questions on a topic. It is
not for emergency information; an answer is usually provided in 24-48
hours, but sometimes it can be longer. This site is worth a nice long
browse.
