Charles A. Cutter, one of the founders of the American Library Association, is remembered for his rules for the innovative idea of a dictionary card catalog and for his decimal tables for keeping authors' names in alphabetical order.

To 'cutter' a book is to produce a line in the call number, following the subject classification, indicating the author's name (or sometimes the first letter of the title of the book).

The Cutter classification is considered one of the most logical and scholarly of American classification sytemss. Its outline served as a basis for the Library of Congress classification we use today.
