How to Do a Bibliography

Do you know that you can make a preliminary bibliography--a list of the works you intend to, or think you will consult, by using the online databases?

In all, or almost all, of the Clark State and OhioLINK databases including LOIS and the OhioLINK Libraryl Catalog, you can "mark records." You do this when you have found a list of books, videos, and/or article titles that look like they might be likely sources for your project. Instead of copying them in longhand or printing one screen at a time, you can print them in a list with all of the relevant information. Here's how for some of the most frequently used sources:

In the Library & OhioLINK Catalog:

  • Put a checkmark or X (by clicking) in the box at the left of the title in your list. Do this for each title you want to be able to remember or get back to.
  • When you're finished marking titles on that page, save marked records.
  • Follow the directions to view marked records.
  • Choose - Format of List: Brief Display and Send List To: Screen.
  • Click the Submit button. Your marked items will show up in your browser.
  • Print the list using your browser buttons.

In EBSCO Databases (such as Academic Search Premier):

  • From your results, click on Add (picture of folder). Do this for as many citations as you want added.
  • The label will change to Added and your folder at the top of the screen will read Folder has # items.
  • Click on Folder has # items and choose a Delivery Option: Print, Email, or Save to Disk.
  • Follow the directions on the Manager page, choosing if you want the citations and/or full text when available.

In OhioLINK Databases:

  • Bookmarking from OhioLINK - OhioLINK provides easy to follow directions for bookmarking in the Electronic Journal Center and other databases like Academic Search Premier for easy, repeated access to articles.

Once you've prepared a list of the sources you used, you will need to actually prepare the bibliography. For help on how to write a bibliography, check out the following websites, or consult the Citing your Sources pathfinder.
